Weekly Unfinished Tales and Short Stories from our Dataset

Welcome to our weekly dispatch from the ‘Unfinished Tales and Short Stories’ collection, a series of narrative experiments from our ongoing creative arts and research program. This project was born from a simple, yet powerful, impulse: to explore the boundaries of storytelling for the sheer fun of it, and to learn what we can do with emerging creative technologies. Each fragment represents a moment of discovery, a brief journey into a world conceived through a blend of human ingenuity and computational collaboration.

These stories serve as vital data points for the project’s core research objectives. In the realm of AI-Assisted Scriptwriting, they provide a diverse corpus for studying idea generation, plot structuring, and the crafting of alternative narrative arcs. For Talent Development, they function as practical case studies, helping us understand the evolving skill sets required for creative professionals navigating AI, immersive technologies, and the necessity of interdisciplinary approaches in the digital age. They are, in essence, the raw material from which we build our understanding of tomorrow’s storytelling.

Today’s Unfinished Tales and Short Stories

A woman with a tense expression pushes through a narrow, dark underground passage, lit by a blue glow from an object she holds.

The Cairn’s Silent Witness

Author: Leaf Richards | Category: High Fantasy | Genre: Coming-of-Age

The boreal forest pressed in, a dense wall of spruce and pine, its summer heat thick and humid, smelling of damp earth and resin. Underfoot, the moss-cushioned ground gave way to sharp, hidden roots. Andie clutched the rough leather map, her knuckles white. Rex moved ahead, a silent shadow among the trees, his eyes scanning for movement. Saol, ever observant, checked their back trail, the rustle of leaves amplified by their frantic pace.

A young woman covered in dust and sweat, atop a high concrete wall in an abandoned factory, looking determined.

Against the Burned Path

Author: Leaf Richards | Category: Sports Fiction | Genre: Action-Adventure

The humid summer air hung heavy, thick with the scent of hot asphalt and something acrid from the nearby industrial estate. Sunlight, brutal and unyielding, baked the concrete labyrinth of the abandoned factory complex. Rust stained the corrugated metal walls, and weeds, defiant and tenacious, pushed through every crack and fissure in the ground, reclaiming territory from forgotten machinery.

A young man, covered in mud, stands in a desolate, wet marsh, his face etched with grim determination, a faint red glow emanating from a decaying building in the background.

The Root of the Rot

Author: Eva Suluk | Category: Psychological Thriller | Genre: Horror

The air hung heavy, thick with the scent of wet earth and something sharp, almost like burning copper, that clung to the back of Ethan’s throat. Below the skeletal branches of oaks, where new, sickly-bright green buds fought through the grey, the ground dissolved into a sucking mire. His boots, heavy with accumulated muck, protested with each withdrawal, making a sound like a wet kiss breaking. A cold drizzle, fine as mist, settled on his face, mingling with sweat that wasn’t from exertion alone.

Two teenagers, Ida and Arnie, frozen in fear at the edge of a vast, empty, decaying swimming pool, looking towards a dark corridor.

A Glimpse Through Grime

Author: Tony Eetak | Category: Hardboiled Noir | Genre: Young Adult Contemporary

The air inside the abandoned municipal recreation centre hung heavy, smelling of damp concrete and something metallic – not quite rust, but more like the ghosts of forgotten lockers and chlorinated youth. Dust motes danced in the sparse beams of afternoon light that pierced the grimy, high-set windows, illuminating a path through the debris. Water stains bled down the walls like ancient, weeping wounds, and the faint, persistent drip from some unseen leak echoed through the vast, hollow space. This place, once vibrant with the shouts and splashes of summer, now lay in an expectant hush, a monument to a past life awaiting its opaque transformation.

A woman and man kneeling in a park, captivated by a vibrant magenta flower.

A Bloom in the Grey

Author: Art Borups Corners | Category: Gritty Realism | Genre: Romance

The morning air, thick with the damp scent of thawing earth and distant exhaust fumes, clung to the skeletal branches of the city park’s elder trees. Patches of tenacious snow, grey at the edges, still stubbornly held on in the shadows beneath crumbling stone benches. But amidst the lingering chill, something impossible was pushing through the grime, a splash of colour too bold for the season, too perfect for this neglected urban corner. Cassy, gloved hands already coated in fine soil, felt a familiar pull of curiosity, a rare warmth stirring in her chest against the crisp morning.

Design Notes and Applied Research

This collection presents a deliberate cross-section of genres and subject categories, from High Fantasy to Gritty Realism. The works demonstrate a focused development of craft, requiring creators to master the distinct narrative structures and tonal demands of each form. This exploration illustrates how digital tools facilitate rapid iteration and the blending of established conventions, directly supporting our project’s focus on skill acquisition in a transforming artistic environment.

The juxtaposition of disparate forms like Sports Fiction and Psychological Thrillers proved to be a productive and engaging experiment for our cohort. This exercise confirmed that core storytelling principles remain resonant and adaptable across a wide spectrum of creative contexts. The resulting collection serves as a significant artifact of our inquiry, documenting the intersection of traditional narrative art and contemporary digital practice.

About the Project

The Unfinished Tales and Short Stories collection was an interdisciplinary arts and narrative storytelling experiment in 2025. It was part of a creative arts and participatory research project by The Arts Incubator Winnipeg and the Art Borups Corners collectives. It focuses on two key areas: AI-Assisted Storytelling and Scriptwriting, exploring AI tools for generating ideas, plot structures, and story arcs; and Talent Development and Training, studying digital skills, literacy and training needs for creative professionals by experimenting with AI and immersive technologies to inform future projects. Funding and support were generously provided by the Ontario Arts Council Multi and Inter-Arts Projects program and the Government of Ontario. We thank them for supporting the arts, digital transformation, and applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) research.
