Weekly Unfinished Tales and Short Stories from our Dataset
Welcome to this week’s curation of “Unfinished Tales,” a series of short stories emerging from our ongoing creative arts, storytelling, and AI research program. These narrative experiments were originally undertaken for fun, serving as a playground to support digital literacy skills and to simply see what we can do when human creativity intersects with algorithmic generation. By blending traditional literary tropes with machine learning outputs, we are not only testing the boundaries of genre but also fostering a deeper understanding of how emerging technologies can augment the creative process in unexpected and delightful ways.
These specific stories serve our broader project goals in AI-Assisted Storytelling and Scriptwriting by providing tangible case studies for generating diverse ideas, plot structures, and alternative story arcs. Furthermore, they are instrumental in our Talent Development and Training initiatives, where we study the specific skills creative professionals need to manage AI tools effectively within an interdisciplinary framework. It is important to remember that this work was entirely experimental, designed to explore the nuances of immersive storytelling and the evolving role of the writer in an increasingly digital landscape.
Today’s Unfinished Tales and Short Stories

The Pallid Ink
Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Family Saga | Genre: Thriller
A biting autumn chill permeates the ancient, dusty attic of the Blackwood estate. Jared, driven by an unsettling premonition, searches through generations of forgotten relics, his torch beam a lone probe against the oppressive darkness, as a sense of urgency and unseen eyes press down upon him.

The Sky-Stranded Behemoth
Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Cinematic | Genre: Historical Fiction
The wind had bitten through the canvas all night, but Akele was used to it. The chill of the mountains, the distant calls of coyotes, the sharp scent of pine and damp earth – these were the constants of his isolated existence. This morning, however, an entirely new sound had woven itself into the fabric of the wild, a low, thrumming resonance that vibrated through the very ground beneath his sleeping bag. It was the sound of thunder, but a thunder that refused to break the sky, a deep, mechanical growl that echoed with an unnatural precision.

The Recursive Glimmer in the Hall
Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Magical Realism | Genre: Sci-Fi
The community hall, a patchwork of old timbers and new drywall, felt unnervingly cold despite the whirring space heaters. Outside, the perpetual twilight of a Northwestern Ontario winter pressed against the windows, a blue-grey hush over snow-laden pines. Inside, a low murmur of conversation hung heavy, spiced with stale coffee and a faint, lingering smell of paint from the recent flood repairs.

A Cold Afternoon at the Stop
Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Boys Love (BL) | Genre: Romance
The air bit, sharp and unforgiving, painting the exposed skin with an ache that seeped into the bones. The bus shelter offered little reprieve from the biting wind that whipped down the city street, carrying with it the scent of wet asphalt and distant woodsmoke. Daniel huddled deeper into his jacket, trying to coax some warmth from the fabric, his gaze fixed on the empty stretch of road where the number seventeen bus was perpetually late. Winter had settled in, grim and grey, and with it, a pervasive quiet, broken only by the rumble of passing cars and the occasional, lonely siren.

A Confluence of Ochre and Absence
Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Paranormal Romance | Genre: Contemporary Fiction
The air held that particular, metallic tang of late autumn, a scent of damp earth and decaying leaves that clung to David’s coat. A low, grey sky pressed down, threatening rain, but for now, only a persistent wind rustled through the skeletal trees, plucking the last stubborn ochre and crimson leaves from their branches. The quiet crunch underfoot was a lonely rhythm against the vast silence of the suburban street.
Design Notes and Applied Research
This daily collection, encompassing genres from thriller to contemporary fiction, serves as a practical application of the core competencies developed during the “Storytelling and the Arts” program. By navigating complex thematic landscapes—such as cinematic family sagas and paranormal romance—participants have demonstrated the adaptability required in the modern digital creative economy. The inclusion of distinct categories like Boys Love (BL) and magical realism further highlights how digital transformation enables creators to explore diverse narrative frameworks with precision.
This initiative functioned as a dynamic experiment in integrating emerging AI tools with traditional research approaches and storytelling techniques. The process provided critical insights into the evolving intersection of technology and the arts, proving to be both an educational and thoroughly enjoyable project for the cohort. Ultimately, the resulting archive documents a successful exploration of how digital skills can expand the boundaries of creative expression.
About the Project
The Unfinished Tales and Short Stories collection was an interdisciplinary arts and narrative storytelling experiment in 2025. It was part of a creative arts and participatory research project by The Arts Incubator Winnipeg and the Art Borups Corners collectives. It focuses on two key areas: AI-Assisted Storytelling and Scriptwriting, exploring AI tools for generating ideas, plot structures, and story arcs; and Talent Development and Training, studying digital skills, literacy and training needs for creative professionals by experimenting with AI and immersive technologies to inform future projects. Funding and support were generously provided by the Ontario Arts Council Multi and Inter-Arts Projects program and the Government of Ontario. We thank them for supporting the arts, digital transformation, and applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) research.
