Welcome to our weekly dispatch from the ‘Unfinished Tales and Short Stories’ collection, a dataset born from our ongoing creative arts and research program. This interdisciplinary experiment in narrative storytelling was undertaken first and foremost for fun, and to explore the evolving landscape of creative expression. What you’ll read here are raw, generative fragments—the digital clay from which we are learning what we can do when human and machine creativity intersect in the simple act of telling a story.
These narrative seeds directly serve the project’s dual focus on AI-Assisted Scriptwriting and Talent Development. For our researchers, each story acts as a testbed for generating novel plot structures, exploring alternative character arcs, and refining the collaborative process between writer and algorithm. Concurrently, they provide invaluable insight into the skills required for creative professionals in this new technological paradigm, informing our study of digital literacy, interdisciplinary approaches, and the unique challenges of managing emergent, AI-driven narratives.

Rustbloom and Hardwired Hues

The persistent, fine drizzle of Neo-Montreal clung to everything, an oily sheen on the ferrocrete, a greasy film on the flickering holo-ads that promised eternal youth or instant credit. Rust-coloured leaves, long past their vibrant autumn prime, plastered themselves to chrome-plated street corners, bleeding chemical dyes into the perpetually damp ground. The air, thick with the smell of wet exhaust, synth-spice, and something vaguely metallic, carried a low, throbbing hum – the city’s ceaseless metabolism. Inside Sammie Taylor’s cramped, overheated apartment, the only light came from the glow of outdated screens and the rhythmic blink of a dozen charging indicator lights, painting his face in shifting greens and blues.
The Improbable Departure of the Rusty Valiant

The Bronze Potato’s Pilgrimage

The air in Elmwood hung thick with the damp perfume of decaying autumn leaves and the faint, unsettling whiff of desperation. Rain slicked the pavement, mirroring the dull sheen on the faces of those who seemed destined to remain, eternally caught in the slow, grinding machinery of small-town life. This was the landscape of ordinary absurdities, now punctuated by the highly exaggerated crisis of a missing municipal eyesore, and the reluctant protagonist caught in its surreal wake.
The Chill Current of Departure

The city sprawled beneath a perpetually bruised sky, its endless towers spearing into the grey. A bitter wind, laden with ice particles and the metallic tang of exhaust, scoured the skeletal structures of Sector Seven. Neon arteries pulsed, indifferent to the encroaching winter, casting an anemic glow across the slick, frost-rimmed rooftops. Every exhalation was a ghost in the frigid air, a transient plume against the relentless, cold architecture of a future unasked for.
Design Notes and Applied Research
This daily collection presents a deliberate juxtaposition of established genres and experimental narrative forms. The inclusion of structured genres like Crime Procedural alongside techniques such as Stream of Consciousness highlights the development of diverse authorial skills, from disciplined plotting to evocative interiority. Furthermore, the thematic undercurrents in Cyberpunk and the structural freedom of Surrealist entries directly engage with our project’s focus on the digital transformation of storytelling.
The synthesis of these disparate elements proved to be a valuable creative exercise. It served as a compelling investigation into how classic narrative structures can be reinterpreted or challenged through contemporary lenses and digital-age sensibilities. The resulting works demonstrate a dynamic interplay between form and content, affirming the productive nature of this exploration.
About the Project
The Unfinished Tales and Short Stories collection was an interdisciplinary arts and narrative storytelling experiment in 2025. It was part of a creative arts and participatory research project by The Arts Incubator Winnipeg and the Art Borups Corners collectives. It focuses on two key areas: AI-Assisted Storytelling and Scriptwriting, exploring AI tools for generating ideas, plot structures, and story arcs; and Talent Development and Training, studying digital skills, literacy and training needs for creative professionals by experimenting with AI and immersive technologies to inform future projects. Funding and support were generously provided by the Ontario Arts Council Multi and Inter-Arts Projects program and the Government of Ontario.
