Residents come together for a successful community garden and flower planting to enhance Dyment Recreation Hall park spaces throughout the summer season.

BORUPS CORNERS, ON — Community volunteers spent Saturday transforming the grounds of the Dyment Recreation Hall in Melgund Township, planting flowers, apple trees, and new garden beds as part of a community beautification project preparing the recreation complex for upcoming Canada Day Festival celebrations in Northwestern Ontario.

Residents gathered on Saturday afternoon to take part in the Community Garden Gathering, a volunteer-led initiative focused on enhancing the recreation hall’s park and greenspace while creating a more welcoming environment for community events, recreation activities, and public gatherings.

Armed with flowers, dirt and gardening tools, volunteers worked side-by-side to establish colourful flower baskets, improve landscaped areas throughout the Dyment Recreation Hall greenspace. The effort quickly transformed several areas of the recreation complex, adding new colour and greenery to one of Melgund Township’s most important community gathering spaces.

The project was organized through a partnership involving the Local Services Board of Melgund Recreation Committee, community volunteers, Art Borups Corners, and Melgund Recreation, Arts and Culture. Organizers described the initiative as both a practical beautification project and an opportunity for residents to contribute directly to the improvement of local public spaces.

By mid-afternoon, the results of the community garden project were already visible. Newly planted flowers brightened the deck and pavilion areas, creating a more inviting setting for residents and visitors.

“The response from the community was incredible,” organizers said following the event. “People came out ready to help, and throughout the day there was a real sense of pride in working together to improve the Dyment Recreation Hall and the surrounding park. Everyone could see the difference being made.”

The volunteer effort also serves an important role in preparing the recreation complex for the annual Melgund Township Canada Day Festival scheduled for July 1. The popular community celebration will feature an artist and vendor marketplace, live music, family-friendly activities, food vendors, and community programming throughout the day.

Organizers noted that the newly established gardens will continue to grow and flourish throughout the summer, providing lasting benefits for residents who use the recreation facilities and for visitors attending community events at Dyment Recreation Hall.

Beyond the physical improvements, participants said the Community Garden Gathering demonstrated the value of community volunteerism and local stewardship. The project brought together residents, artists, gardeners, families, and community organizations around a shared goal of improving public spaces while strengthening community connections.

As flowers begin to bloom and young apple trees take root, the community gardening enhancements will stand as a visible reminder of what can be accomplished when volunteers work together to invest in the future of Melgund Township.

Additional community beautification, gardening, arts, and volunteer opportunities are expected throughout the summer as local organizations and volunteers continue efforts to enhance public spaces and support community life.
