Community members can provide feedback on infrastructure, water management, accommodation and waste management options.

The Local Services Board of Melgund will host a community workshop on Wednesday, October 28, focused on the Deep Geological Repository (DGR) for Canada’s Used Nuclear Fuel Project. The session will give residents an opportunity to hear about four Alternative Means Studies being conducted by the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) and provide feedback on the options under consideration.

The community is rarely included in any form of discussions related to studies until after they happen. Residents are strongly encouraged to come out and take part.

The drop-in workshop takes place from 4:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Dyment Community Hall, 13 Hogan Road, Dyment, Ontario. As part of NWMO’s regulatory engagement program, the event will focus on alternative approaches to project design, including infrastructure connections, water management, accommodation facilities and waste management areas.

Four Alternative Means Studies

The studies form part of the assessment process under the federal Impact Assessment Act. They examine different ways of carrying out the proposed project and help identify preferred options. The workshop aims to explain this process, identify which studies are of greatest interest to the Local Services Board of Melgund and surrounding communities, and gather public feedback.

The Utility Corridor and Alignment Options study will examine potential routes for utility and transportation connections between the project site and existing infrastructure. The Water Source and Discharge Options study will consider alternative water intake and discharge locations and related water management approaches.

The Accommodation Camp Options study will assess possible locations for the project’s accommodation camp within the proposed site footprint. The Waste Management study will examine potential locations for the Excavated Rock Management Area and Organics Management Area.

Together, these studies address how infrastructure and supporting facilities could be arranged within the proposed project site.

Decommissioning and Future Land Use

The session may also invite feedback on site decommissioning and end land use. These topics concern the eventual decommissioning of the project and potential uses of the land following the project’s operational life.

How to Participate

The workshop will include an introductory presentation about the studies, followed by interactive activities where participants can share their views. Community members can identify the topics that matter most to them and provide feedback on the alternatives being considered.

Residents of Melgund and surrounding communities are invited to attend this in-person, drop-in session.
