The expanded community garden at the Dyment Recreation Hall is ready for spring, with new planters and garden boxes for food production and recreation.

There is a lot to look forward to at the Dyment Recreation Hall and Park next year. The community garden expansion is finished, with new raised beds and planters now part of the grounds. As autumn gives way to winter, the project marks another step forward in making the park a place where people can spend time outdoors, grow food and take part in community activities.

The additional growing space will serve several purposes throughout the year. Residents will have more room to pursue recreational gardening, while the garden will also contribute to local food security programming and food production. These activities connect with other community efforts, including shared meals and community breakfasts, bringing food growing and preparation into the wider life of the recreation hall.

What makes these improvements particularly valuable is the range of activities they can accommodate. Gardening offers a reason to get outside, work with others and stay active, while the park itself provides space for recreation, arts and other community programming. Together, these resources help create more opportunities for residents to participate, contribute and enjoy the outdoors close to home.

The finished garden is also a welcome addition to the appearance of the grounds. The new boxes and planters sit within a greenspace that the community can continue to enjoy, and the completed work gives everyone something tangible to appreciate after a full season of activity. It is satisfying to see the plans and effort come together in a space that will continue to serve the community well beyond this year’s growing season.

Several organizations helped make this year’s work possible. Melgund Recreation, Arts and Culture, Art Borups Corners Living Lab, the Nuclear Waste Management Organization, the Local Services Board of Melgund all contributed to the work. We are all especially thankful to the Ontario Trillium Foundation Capital Grants program for funding the improvements completed this season. Their support has helped strengthen the facilities and outdoor spaces available for community use and future programming.

For gardeners, the next milestone will be the return of warmer weather. There will be new opportunities to plant, tend the beds and see what the expanded space can produce. The garden will have time to rest over winter, but anticipation for the next growing season is already building.

With the improvements now in place, Dyment Recreation Hall and Park is better equipped to support the activities that bring people together. The coming year will be an opportunity to make full use of the new growing spaces and continue building on the work accomplished this season.
