Local volunteers and leadership boards team up with heavy machinery to prep gravel pads for community garden expansion.

Before the northern frost locks down the soil for the season, the grounds at Dyment Recreation Hall and Park have transformed into a hive of earth-moving activity. Diesel engines roared and gravel flew this weekend as dedicated teams from the Local Services Board of Melgund and Melgund Recreation, Arts and Culture rolled in with heavy equipment to reshape the landscape. Rather than winding down, the park is actively breaking ground.

The crew spent the weekend leveling soil and packing down heavy gravel pads to construct a solid foundation for our incoming community garden shed. This isn’t just extra storage—it’s the backbone of a major expansion for our local food initiatives. Alongside new raised planter beds and an upgraded water delivery system, the new facility will give local growers of all ages the tools and space they need to thrive come spring.

Turning ambitious outdoor blueprints into real, physical infrastructure requires serious community support. A massive thank you goes to the Ontario Trillium Foundation Capital Grants Program and the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO). Their support and funding makes it possible to pour real resources directly into our public grounds and food security programs.

From diesel power and aggregate dirt to fresh harvest potential, the revitalization of our community recreation hub is moving full steam ahead. Keep an eye on our page for more behind-the-scenes progress as we get everything built and ready before the first snow flies!
