New plumbing, sinks, hot water and water filtration improvements strengthen the kitchen at Dyment Recreation Hall and Park thanks to the Ontario Trillium Foundation Capital Grants Program.

The Cook Shack at the Dyment Recreation Hall and Park in Melgund Township, Northwestern Ontario is getting an important upgrade. New water lines, sinks and a hot water heater have been installed in the commercial kitchen, complementing recently completed water treatment and filtration improvements supported by the Ontario Trillium Foundation Capital Grants program.

For a community facility that supports recreation, gardening and local food initiatives, dependable water infrastructure makes a real difference. These improvements will help the Cook Shack better accommodate the activities taking place throughout the year, from community gatherings and recreational events to food preparation and food production programming.

Water improvements have been a long-standing priority for the facility. As community gardening and food security programming continue to develop, having the right infrastructure in place is an important part of making these activities possible. The new plumbing and kitchen fixtures, together with the upgraded treatment and filtration systems, represent a significant step towards that goal.

The work also builds on the value of the Cook Shack as a shared community resource. A functional commercial kitchen can support everything from preparing meals for community events to activities connected with local food production. Improving the facility helps create more opportunities to put existing community infrastructure to use and support programs that bring people together.

The Ontario Trillium Foundation Capital Grants program, along with funding from the Nuclear Waste Management Organization has helped make these improvements possible, supporting practical investments in the facilities the community relies on. Combined with the work taking place across the Dyment Recreation Hall and Park, the upgrades are part of an ongoing effort to strengthen local spaces for recreation, food security and community participation.

There is still plenty to look forward to as these improvements become part of the Cook Shack’s day-to-day use. With new plumbing, hot water and water treatment infrastructure in place, the kitchens are better equipped to support the community’s growing range of activities.

For Melgund Township, these upgrades are another important investment in a facility with plenty of work to do and a growing role in community life.
