The Melgund Resilience & Recreation Initiative: Building Social Strength Through Creativity and Connection
The Melgund Climate Club is a recreation-first initiative designed to bring the people of Melgund, Dyment, and Borups Corners together. We believe that a strong community is an active one, and our program uses participatory and arts-based approaches to celebrate our connection to the land and to one another. By aligning with the Framework for Recreation in Canada, we are turning local climate awareness into a social opportunity—fostering “Climate Entrepreneurship” through shared joy, creative expression, and community spirit.
Arts-Based Connection and Collective Voice
Our program uses the arts as a bridge to bring neighbors together. We believe that exploring the world around us should be a creative and social experience. Through collaborative workshops and interdisciplinary activities, we use storytelling, visual arts, and music to explore our environment. This approach allows us to process complex local changes in a supportive, social atmosphere, reducing isolation and turning information-sharing into a meaningful recreational pastime that nourishes our mental and social well-being.
Stewardship and the Heart of the Community
In the North, our recreation facilities are the center of our social lives. Our initiative focuses on the Melgund Community Hall as a space for shared stewardship. By gathering to imagine the future of our facilities, we explore how our shared spaces can better reflect our environmental values. We view our community buildings as living projects where we can work together to reduce our footprint and enhance our surroundings. This focus on stewardship ensures that our local “SPAR” (Sport, Physical Activity, and Recreation) infrastructure remains vibrant, beautiful, and fit for the purpose of bringing people together.
Creative Placemaking and Our Natural Heritage
Recreation is at its best when it connects people to the places they love. We use placemaking to celebrate the unique geography of Melgund. By sharing local histories and creating community-led art, we highlight the beauty and importance of our natural environment—from the air-purifying forests to the waters that sustain us. These activities allow us to define our own community identity and ensure that our township remains a vibrant, liveable place where the natural world is woven into our daily social life.
Building Social Fabric Through Shared Play
At its core, this initiative is about the “social health” of our community. We use the concept of “play with a purpose” to bridge the gap between individual residents and the wider world. By turning local engagement into a recreational activity, we create a welcoming space for all ages to participate in community life. Through these social gatherings and creative projects, we are building a stronger, more connected Melgund, ensuring that our community continues to be a place of belonging and vitality for everyone.
