A grass-roots movement breathes new life into Northwestern Ontario’s rural art scene.
Walk into the lower level of the Dyment Recreation Hall, and you won’t find a dusty storage room or forgotten folding chairs. Instead, you’ll step straight into a buzzing studio and gallery space brimming with vibrant paintings, intricate woodcrafts, animal skulls, and multimedia storytelling. For years, folks in Northwestern Ontario have known that our region is bursting with incredible creative talent—what’s been missing is somewhere to actually put it on display.
That’s where this transformative space comes in. What started as an under-utilized basement has been reimagined by dedicated community members into a dedicated regional hub for Northern Ontario arts, culture, and heritage. Breathing new life into local infrastructure that was often overlooked, Melgund Township has carved out a permanent, welcoming home for visual artists, makers, and storytellers across the region.

Four Seasons of Interactive Culture
As a dedicated participatory arts space, the hall’s lower level is designed for hands-on connection. It hosts dynamic hands-on workshops, community-based participatory research, and interactive gatherings where neighbours can create alongside local masters. It’s also home to our nonprofit, Melgund Recreation, Arts and Culture and a frequent meeting space for local arts collectives like the Art Borups Corners Society. The program was seeded in late 2025 with support from the Ontario Arts Council’s Multi and Inter-Arts Projects program.
At the heart of the space is an ambitious exhibition calendar: four distinct shows a year, bringing a fresh rotation of works for spring, summer, fall, and winter. Whether showcasing Indigenous beadwork, local oral history projects, or contemporary portraiture, each show highlights the authentic spirit of the North. It’s a powerful proof-of-concept for how small rural communities can mobilize existing buildings to nurture big regional talent—one shovel, paintbrush, and seasonal gallery display at a time.
This small, but growing arts space is open on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1-4 p.m. and at other times by appointment. All are welcome! Contact us for more information.
