New Arts and Culture Space in Melgund Township, Northwestern Ontario
Residents of Melgund Township are stepping into a new chapter for local arts and community life, as a newly renovated space in the lower level of the Dyment Recreation Hall officially opens its doors.
This week marked the first arts exhibition of the year in the transformed venue, offering residents an early look at what organizers hope will become a vibrant and lasting hub for creativity. The exhibition features works from both local and regional artists, showcasing a range of styles and perspectives that reflect the broader cultural landscape of the area.
The space itself is a thoughtful reuse of a previously empty area within the hall, now reimagined as a flexible and welcoming environment for artistic and community activity. Its development was made possible through the support of Melgund Recreation Arts and Culture, alongside the Local Services Board of the Melgund Recreation Committee.
The initiative builds on earlier pilot work launched in 2022 with support from the Canada Council for the Arts, as well as more recent backing in 2025 through the Ontario Arts Council’s Multi and Inter-Arts Program. Together, these efforts have helped lay the groundwork for a more sustained and locally driven arts presence in the community.
Beyond exhibitions, the new space has been designed with everyday use in mind. A dedicated reading and work area invites residents to drop in, focus on personal projects, or gather for small meetings. Organizers see this as key to the space’s long-term success—not just as a gallery, but as an active, shared environment that supports connection, collaboration, and ongoing community use.
The exhibition is open to the public on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., and on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., providing multiple opportunities for residents and visitors to experience the space.
As the first exhibition gets underway, the opening signals more than just a new venue. It reflects a broader commitment to rebuilding and strengthening Melgund Township’s cultural infrastructure, creating opportunities for both artists and residents to shape what comes next.
