Cooking Up Community: How Melgund Township is Redefining Recreation in Northwestern Ontario through food.
In the heart of Northwestern Ontario—from the quiet stretches of Dyment to the community of Borups Corners—the kitchen has always been more than just a room; it is a place of gathering, survival, and joy. But today, we are taking that timeless tradition and giving it a modern, innovative twist.
Welcome to the Melgund: Come Eat With Us project, a new initiative that views the culinary arts not as a chore, but as a vital community recreation program.
We often think of recreation as sports arenas and hiking trails, but true recreation is about engaging the mind, body, and spirit. Treating cooking and baking as accessible leisure activities, we are incubating a culture where food literacy flourishes. This program empowers residents to master essential culinary skills, understand nutrition, and gain the confidence to create delicious meals from accessible, local ingredients—a critical step in addressing food security in rural and northern communities.
But we aren’t just stirring pots; we are bridging the digital divide.
This project doubles as a recreational digital literacy initiative. Learning to craft, store, and browse recipes, community members engage with modern technology in a practical, fun, and low-pressure environment. It is a “digital campfire” where recipe sharing becomes a tool for connection, allowing neighbours to swap secrets for the perfect sourdough or the heartiest moose stew using their smartphones and tablets.
Whether you are a seasoned chef or a beginner looking to boil water without burning it, this program invites you to learn, share, and eat. It turns the necessity of dinner into the joy of creation.
So, come eat with us. Let’s celebrate the ingenuity of the Northwest, strengthen our food systems, and build community—one recipe at a time.
