Weekly Unfinished Tales and Short Stories from our Dataset

This daily collection features short stories generated from our ongoing creative arts and AI research program, where we explore the intersection of technology and narrative structure. What began as a fun initiative to test the limits of generative models has evolved into a practical exercise in digital literacy, allowing us to learn exactly what these tools can achieve in a creative setting. These experimental vignettes serve as a sandbox for understanding how artificial intelligence processes complex themes, offering us a unique opportunity to refine our prompts and better understand the collaborative dynamics between human intent and machine output.

These specific narrative outputs directly support our project’s core objectives in AI-Assisted Storytelling and Scriptwriting by providing tangible case studies on how algorithms handle subtext, pacing, and dystopian world-building. As an entirely experimental endeavor, this dataset is crucial for our Talent Development and Training modules, illustrating the evolving skill sets required for creative professionals to manage immersive technologies and interdisciplinary workflows effectively. By dissecting these generated drafts, we can better identify the training needs for future storytellers who must navigate the complexities of digital co-creation while maintaining a strong grasp on traditional narrative craft.

The Last Unmarked Card

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Steampunk Adventures | Genre: Dystopian

The fluorescent lights hummed a low, unsettling drone over the sterile white aisles of the pharmacy. Maria clutched her worn fabric purse, the synthetic smell of sanitiser and stale paper clinging to the air, making her stomach clench. A dull ache throbbed in her right knee, a constant companion these days, mirroring the mounting tension in her chest.

The Grey Silence

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Surreal / Absurdist | Genre: Dystopian Thriller

Linda navigates the desolate, surveillance-choked alleys of a frozen city, her senses heightened by the constant threat of discovery, before meeting with an old contact who gives her a perilous new directive.

The Weight of Paper Dust

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Fast-Paced / Pulpy | Genre: Historical Conspiracy

The smell of old paper and dust motes suspended in the weak, autumn light that filtered through the high, arched windows of the National Archives in downtown Winnipeg. It wasn’t the heroic scent of ancient scrolls or forgotten treaties, but something more mundane: stale air, cheap adhesive, and the faint, persistent metallic tang of filing cabinets. Leah sat hunched over a heavy, brittle binder, its corners worn smooth from decades of neglect, her finger tracing the yellowed lines of government policy drafts from the late 1980s.

Cobalt Scars

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Surreal / Absurdist | Genre: Dystopian Thriller

The air itself felt like a physical blow, a raw, cutting thing that scraped against the exposed skin of Trevor’s face. Snow, hard-packed and unforgiving, crunched under his boots with a sound that seemed too loud in the pre-dawn quiet, a quiet perpetually on edge. Above, the city’s skeletal architecture, once symbols of commerce and aspiration, now stood as monuments to the regime, their sharp edges silhouetted against a bruised sky that promised no sun, only more grey. Every exhale was a cloud, a fleeting ghost of warmth immediately stolen by the relentless winter.

Two figures, James and Benton, stand on a crumbling forest track, looking tense. The autumn woods are muted and show signs of environmental distress, with strange leaf colors and a still, iridescent puddle.

A Trace of Something Unseen

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Post-Apocalyptic Survival | Genre: Post-Apocalyptic Survival

The air held a metallic tang, thin and sharp, like old blood mixed with rain. James pulled the collar of his jacket higher, the worn canvas doing little against the insidious chill that seemed to seep into his bones, independent of the actual temperature. Beside him, Benton kicked a loose piece of shale, the faint clatter echoing too loudly in the otherwise muffled woods. They were deep in it now, past the last of the official markers, where the trees grew just a little too sparse, and the undergrowth had taken on an unsettling, almost luminous, pallor.

Design Notes and Applied Research

The inclusion of diverse genres, ranging from Steampunk Adventures to Dystopian Thrillers, serves as a practical case study in adapting narrative techniques for the digital age. By engaging with complex themes such as historical conspiracy and surrealist absurdity, participants exercised critical research methodologies essential for modern world-building. This selection underscores the versatility required to navigate the evolving landscape of digital arts, directly addressing the core objectives of skills development within the program.

This initiative functioned as a dynamic experiment in integrating artificial intelligence with traditional storytelling frameworks to produce fast-paced and imaginative content. The process provided valuable insights into how research approaches can be augmented by emerging technologies, resulting in a highly engaging and educational experience for the cohort. Ultimately, this collection stands as a testament to the enjoyment found in creative experimentation and the continuous evolution of artistic skills.

About the Project

The Unfinished Tales and Short Stories collection was an interdisciplinary arts and narrative storytelling experiment in 2025. It was part of a creative arts and participatory research project by The Arts Incubator Winnipeg and the Art Borups Corners collectives. It focuses on two key areas: AI-Assisted Storytelling and Scriptwriting, exploring AI tools for generating ideas, plot structures, and story arcs; and Talent Development and Training, studying digital skills, literacy and training needs for creative professionals by experimenting with AI and immersive technologies to inform future projects. Funding and support were generously provided by the Ontario Arts Council Multi and Inter-Arts Projects program and the Government of Ontario. We thank them for supporting the arts, digital transformation, and applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) research.
