Gearing Up for Canada Day Celebrations

Melgund Township, ON – The Local Service Board (LSB) of Melgund held its monthly meeting on Tuesday, June 17, 2025. The meeting focused on final preparations for the upcoming Canada Day celebrations and provided updates on ongoing community projects.

Canada Day Preparations in Full Swing

With Canada Day just around the corner, the Local Services Board is busy finalizing plans for the July 1st festivities, scheduled from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Key decisions include purchasing two door prizes, with a budget of up to $75, and conducting an inventory of food, pop, and water supplies. Following community requests, smokies will be available alongside the usual fare, and four dozen Canada Day cupcakes are on order. Hamburger and hotdog buns will be ordered from Safeway in Dryden.

Community members are pulling together to ensure a festive atmosphere. The community is arranging for new flags, and thanks were extended to Jamie for creating the Canada Day posters and to Gerry for printing them. Pete Dunham and Morris Robinson were also thanked for painting the dance floor, ready for the celebrations.

A significant update regarding food service for Canada Day is the receipt of the Food Permit from the Northwestern Health Unit (NWHU), with one key restriction: gravy cannot be served for fries or poutine.

The LSB is also actively seeking volunteers. Events will need some help in the kitchen, and to assist with putting up the tents.

In an effort to raise funds and support the events, Terri Bell and Michelle Robinson have been canvassing for donations for a Silent Auction. Morris and Michelle Robinson have also coordinated with CKDR for radio advertising and for the Canada Day poster to be displayed on CKDR’s website.

Special thanks to Schmidt Greenhouses in Dryden for supporting this year’s event. Their contributions, alongside Downtown Dollar and Tim Hortons and the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) in making this year’s event possible.

Cookshack Expansion and Other Projects

Beyond Canada Day, progress is being made on other community initiatives. The cement slab for the cookshack extension and new pavilion has been poured, with construction slated to begin early next week. Pete secured quotes for a load of gravel to level the ground in front of the cookshack and the new addition; Tim will supply the gravel, and Pete will handle the spreading.

The LSB also confirmed that the 2024 audited financial statements, conducted by Winters and Company, have been completed. Willie Winters met with the board to review them, and By-Law 04-2025 was approved to formally accept it, moved by Morris Robinson and seconded by Pete Dunham.

The Treasurer’s Report for May 2025 was presented and accepted, moved by Janet Connor and seconded by Morris Robinson. Charitable registration was also approved for the LSB and its recreation programming, which makes it a qualified donee as a municipal or public body performing a function of government in Canada.

Join the Local Services Board of Melgund for a day brimming with music, games, captivating performances, and joyful celebration. This signature event is designed for everyone, with activities for all ages and a commitment to accessibility and inclusion for every community member.

Upcoming Events

In addition to Canada Day, plans are still underway for a “Hot August Night/Afternoon Music Jamboree.” More details will be coming later this summer, so stay tuned! Artists and musicians were planning out the event during last weekend’s Artists Retreat in Borups Corners.

The next regular LSB meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at 7 p.m. at the hall.
