Weekly Unfinished Tales and Short Stories from our Dataset

The following narratives represent a daily selection from the ‘Unfinished Tales and Short Stories’ collection, an ongoing creative arts and research program. This interdisciplinary experiment was conceived as a playful exploration into the multifaceted nature of storytelling, delving into diverse genres and narrative structures to push the boundaries of conventional artistic expression and engagement.

Within this framework, these stories serve as vital data points for our project’s dual objectives. They provide rich material for investigating AI-assisted storytelling and scriptwriting, offering insights into idea generation, complex plot structures, and the development of alternative story arcs. Concurrently, they illuminate critical areas for talent development, highlighting the evolving skills required for creative professionals navigating AI, immersive technologies, digital literacy, and interdisciplinary collaborative practices.

Today’s Unfinished Tales and Short Stories

A gaunt teenage boy in a grey coat huddles in a cold, concrete room, clutching a piece of paper, with snow falling outside.

The Static Dream and the Scrap of Paper

Author: Leaf Richards | Category: Horror | Genre: Dystopian

The cold was a constant, gnawing presence, even in the deepest parts of sleep. It seeped into everything, a low, thrumming hum beneath the skin. Winter was not just a season here; it was a state of being, a shroud drawn over the city and its inhabitants, chilling bone and spirit alike. For James, every morning began not with light, but with the lingering dread of the night’s abstract horrors.

Two anxious teenagers walk on a wet autumn street at night, with a subtle, reflective bird's eye watching from a fallen leaf in the foreground.

The Glass Eye on the Mantle

Author: Leaf R. | Category: Allegorical | Genre: Domestic Thriller

The streetlights flickered, sickly yellow blooms against the bruised velvet of the late autumn sky. Rain had promised itself all day, a grey threat hanging heavy, but hadn’t delivered, leaving the air thick with the scent of wet tarmac and decaying leaves. The pavement, slick with a fine, invisible dampness, reflected the meagre light in smeared streaks, making the familiar path home feel strangely alien, stretched out and vast under the looming shadows of skeletal trees. A chill, more bone-deep than skin-level, pressed against them, seeping through their thin jackets, a premonition of winter’s coming brutality.

Two young children, James and Chrissie, standing in a dimly lit hallway, looking out at a cold, snow-covered street through an open front door.

The Unseen Cold

Author: Eva Suluk | Category: Allegorical | Genre: Young Adult Contemporary

The cold was a sharp, biting thing, a persistent ache in the joints and a raw burn in the lungs. It was the kind of winter night that felt less like a season and more like a punishment, where the very air seemed to hold its breath, waiting. Beneath a sky heavy with low, bruised clouds, two small figures trudged homeward, each step a testament to an endurance born of necessity, not choice. Every rustle of frozen bush, every creak of distant timber, was amplified, stretching the taut threads of an already fraying quiet.

The Screaming Grey

Author: Leaf Richards | Category: Horror | Genre: Dystopian

The metallic tang of fear clung to the back of my throat, a familiar flavour that had taken root in my earliest memories. Sleep offered no escape, only a deeper, more abstract terror where the world was a pulsing grid and unseen machines watched with cold, unblinking eyes. Waking was just a shift in the nightmare, from the grey of dreams to the endless, biting grey of a winter that never truly ended, inside a bunker that felt less like shelter and more like a waiting room.

The Chill in the Recital Hall

Author: Eva Suluk | Category: Horror | Genre: Dystopian

The remnants of a dream clung to me like frost, a jagged, troubling landscape that felt less like an invention of sleep and more like a premonition. The air in the room was a tangible thing, sharp and thin, pulling me back to the familiar ache of reality. It was another winter morning in a world that had forgotten the meaning of warmth.

Design Notes and Applied Research

This collection, spanning Dystopian, Domestic Thriller, and Young Adult Contemporary genres, alongside Horror and Allegorical subjects, critically examines the evolving landscape of digital creation. These narratives showcase how artists develop skills in complex world-building, psychological nuance, and thematic depth, often leveraging digital platforms for broader reach and innovative storytelling. Such diverse approaches directly reflect our project’s focus on refining artistic competencies within a rapidly transforming digital environment.

This compilation has proven to be an exceptionally engaging project, serving as a valuable experiment in pushing creative boundaries within contemporary narrative forms. It provided a dynamic space for participants to explore new storytelling methodologies and refine their craft in response to current artistic and technological shifts. The insights gained from this diverse collection will undoubtedly inform future initiatives, further advancing our understanding of skills development and the digital transformation impacting the arts.

About the Project

The Unfinished Tales and Short Stories collection was an interdisciplinary arts and narrative storytelling experiment in 2025. It was part of a creative arts and participatory research project by The Arts Incubator Winnipeg and the Art Borups Corners collectives. It focuses on two key areas: AI-Assisted Storytelling and Scriptwriting, exploring AI tools for generating ideas, plot structures, and story arcs; and Talent Development and Training, studying digital skills, literacy and training needs for creative professionals by experimenting with AI and immersive technologies to inform future projects. Funding and support were generously provided by the Ontario Arts Council Multi and Inter-Arts Projects program and the Government of Ontario. We thank them for supporting the arts, digital transformation, and applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) research.
