Weekly Unfinished Tales and Short Stories from our Dataset
Welcome to our daily narrative collection, a curated selection of short stories drawn from the ‘Unfinished Tales’ creative arts and research program. This ongoing interdisciplinary experiment was undertaken primarily for the joy of it, a chance to explore the boundaries of storytelling and simply learn what we can do when we combine diverse narrative approaches. These pieces represent moments captured from our dataset, offering glimpses into worlds both strange and familiar, each a testament to the spontaneous and exploratory spirit that drives our work.
Beyond their narrative value, these stories serve as critical artifacts for our research objectives. In the realm of AI-Assisted Scriptwriting, they provide a rich corpus for analyzing plot structures, generating alternative arcs, and refining the collaborative process between human authors and generative systems. Concurrently, for our Talent Development studies, these varied narrative experiments help us identify the evolving skills creative professionals need to navigate interdisciplinary projects, manage emerging technologies, and foster the digital literacy essential for the future of storytelling.
Today’s Unfinished Tales and Short Stories

The Wet Hum
Author: Tony Eetak | Category: Gothic Horror | Genre: Speculative Fiction
A pervasive damp cold seeps through the urban landscape, where the river runs grey and unceasing. Corey, alone on a chipped concrete bench, observes his surroundings, a world muted by the season and an unspoken tension, before a familiar figure emerges from the gloom, bringing with her a strange atmospheric distortion.

The Loom and the Algorithm
Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Slice of Life | Genre: Slice of Life
The air in Seminar Room 3.2 was thick with the scent of lukewarm coffee and the subtle, metallic tang of an old radiator struggling against the late autumn chill. Outside, a light, insistent rain streaked the windowpanes, blurring the already grey cityscape into an Impressionistic wash. Inside, the hum of the fluorescent lights competed with the low murmur of anticipation, a prelude to the usual intellectual sparring.

The Perpetual Discontent
Author: Eva Suluk | Category: Surreal / Absurdist | Genre: Thriller
A persistent, soft drizzle patterned the vast, grimy window of the Department of Harmonious Transitions, blurring the nascent greens of late spring into a watery abstract. Inside, the air hummed with the dry, recycled scent of paper and stale ambition, punctuated by the mechanical clack of distant keypads. Dust motes, in defiance of all diligent cleaning protocols, danced in the anemic glow of the fluorescent tubes, illuminating nothing particularly vital.

A Bloom Under Concrete
Author: Tony Eetak | Category: Contemporary Fiction | Genre: Literary Fiction
The first truly warm afternoon of spring in Winnipeg carried a peculiar scent: not just the damp earth and new growth, but an underlying current of something long buried, freshly exposed. Pavement gleamed with residual moisture, reflecting the pale, hopeful sky. Across the back lane, the skeletal branches of a poplars trembled, their nascent buds clinging like tiny emerald secrets against the grey bark. The air, though gentle, still held a bite, a reminder of the long dormancy that had just passed, yet the insistent urge of life pushed through.

Beneath the Frost
Author: Leaf Richards | Category: Allegorical | Genre: Slice of Life
The aroma of stale coffee and damp wool clung to the air in the small, multi-purpose room at the Fort WilDenny Historical Park community centre, a flimsy attempt at warmth against the furious January wind rattling the single-pane windows. Outside, a thick, insistent snow had been falling for hours, blurring the lines between earth and sky, promising an endless white canvas. Inside, a handful of young adults, bundled in parkas and scarves still slightly frosty at the edges, huddled around a too-small table, a scattering of lukewarm tea cups and half-eaten biscuits testament to their long, arduous meeting.
Design Notes and Applied Research
This collection’s fusion of genres, from Speculative Fiction to Slice of Life, directly reflects our program’s focus on versatile skills development. The exploration of diverse subjects, including Gothic Horror and the Absurdist, challenged participants to refine specific narrative craft and tonal control. This range demonstrates how foundational storytelling techniques are tested and expanded when intersecting with digital production frameworks.
The deliberate juxtaposition of these varied forms proved to be a productive and engaging creative exercise for our participants. This initiative served as a valuable experiment, investigating how narrative artists navigate both classic and contemporary themes through new digital mediums. The resulting body of work provides a compelling record of this exploration into skill acquisition and the ongoing transformation of the arts.
About the Project
The Unfinished Tales and Short Stories collection was an interdisciplinary arts and narrative storytelling experiment in 2025. It was part of a creative arts and participatory research project by The Arts Incubator Winnipeg and the Art Borups Corners collectives. It focuses on two key areas: AI-Assisted Storytelling and Scriptwriting, exploring AI tools for generating ideas, plot structures, and story arcs; and Talent Development and Training, studying digital skills, literacy and training needs for creative professionals by experimenting with AI and immersive technologies to inform future projects. Funding and support were generously provided by the Ontario Arts Council Multi and Inter-Arts Projects program and the Government of Ontario. We thank them for supporting the arts, digital transformation, and applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) research.
