Weekly Unfinished Tales and Short Stories from our Dataset
Welcome to our daily selection of narrative experiments, drawn from the ‘Unfinished Tales and Short Stories’ collection. This ongoing creative arts and research program serves as a vibrant playground for storytelling, exploring the myriad ways a single concept can blossom into diverse narrative forms. At its heart, this project was undertaken simply for the joy of creation and to discover the boundaries of what we can achieve when human creativity is paired with new tools. The stories presented today are direct outputs from this exploratory process, offering a glimpse into our dataset’s rich and varied potential.
These narrative fragments are more than just creative exercises; they are vital components of our research into AI-Assisted Scriptwriting and Talent Development. By tasking generative models with a specific, complex phrase—’mixed-methodological participatory framework’—and observing its application across genres from romance to crime noir, we study how AI can generate nuanced plot structures and alternative story arcs from abstract prompts. Simultaneously, these experiments highlight the evolving skills required for creative professionals, emphasizing the need for digital literacy, critical analysis, and an interdisciplinary approach to manage and guide these powerful new storytelling technologies effectively.
Today’s Unfinished Tales and Short Stories

The Thawing Bloom
Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Romance | Genre: Contemporary Fiction
The air in the university lecture theatre hung heavy and dry, recirculated heat doing little to combat the biting Winnipeg winter that pressed against the tall, grimy windows. Fluorescent lights hummed a low, persistent note overhead, casting a pallid glow over the rows of students hunched over laptops and notebooks. Outside, the Exchange District was a canvas of muted greys and whites, another January storm threatening to descend, mirroring the quiet tension within the room.

A Canvas of Ice and Grime
Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Crime Noir | Genre: Literary Fiction
The wind, a cutting thing, swept down Portage Avenue, carrying the scent of exhaust and thawing salt. Every lamppost cast a distorted, elongated shadow that danced over the dirty snow. The city hummed, a low, metallic thrum beneath the howl of the January gale, forcing Cassian deeper into the threadbare wool of his coat, his hands shoved into pockets that felt too thin.

A Fading Light
Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Literary Fiction | Genre: Literary Fiction
The mid-summer air hung thick and greasy over downtown Winnipeg, a tangible weight that pressed against the old brick of the art centre. Inside, the recycled air conditioning wheezed a tired protest, a low, mechanical hum that became another layer in the atmospheric soup. Light, diffused through grime-streaked windows, painted the lecture room in shades of sickly yellow and grey, making the faces of the young adults gathered there seem drawn and faintly unwell.

The Riverbend Anomaly
Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Young Adult Contemporary | Genre: Mystery
The stifling Winnipeg summer heat pressed in, even within the dusty, air-conditioned chill of the Riverbend Arts Collective’s archives. Maria, an intern, navigated stacks of forgotten creativity, a task meant to be mundane, but then her fingers brushed against something out of place—a plain cardboard box, devoid of labels, emitting a faint, almost imperceptible hum that resonated beneath her fingertips.

The Laptop Screen
Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Crime Noir | Genre: Action-Adventure
The air conditioning in the old Exchange District building barely cut through the August humidity. Nathan, perched on a plastic chair in the back row, watched the projector flicker. Another ‘innovative methodology’ was being unveiled, another attempt to make good on promises the city would inevitably break. He was twenty, almost twenty-one, and already tired.
Design Notes and Applied Research
This collection demonstrates the practical application of narrative craft across a diverse range of genres. The structural demands of Mystery and Crime Noir, alongside the nuanced character work of Literary and Young Adult Fiction, directly reflect our program’s focus on targeted skills development. These works provide a clear survey of how foundational storytelling techniques are being adapted and reinterpreted within the context of digital transformation.
The assembly of this portfolio served as a valuable and productive experiment in creative development. This initiative provided an engaging framework for participants to test genre conventions and explore new narrative forms in a focused environment. The resulting stories stand as a testament to the dynamic potential that emerges when disciplined craft is combined with creative exploration.
About the Project
The Unfinished Tales and Short Stories collection was an interdisciplinary arts and narrative storytelling experiment in 2025. It was part of a creative arts and participatory research project by The Arts Incubator Winnipeg and the Art Borups Corners collectives. It focuses on two key areas: AI-Assisted Storytelling and Scriptwriting, exploring AI tools for generating ideas, plot structures, and story arcs; and Talent Development and Training, studying digital skills, literacy and training needs for creative professionals by experimenting with AI and immersive technologies to inform future projects. Funding and support were generously provided by the Ontario Arts Council Multi and Inter-Arts Projects program and the Government of Ontario. We thank them for supporting the arts, digital transformation, and applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) research.
