Weekly Unfinished Tales and Short Stories from our Dataset

This daily collection presents a series of short stories derived from our ongoing creative arts, storytelling, and AI research program, designed to test the boundaries of machine-generated narrative. While the primary objective was simply to have fun and see what we can do with these emerging tools, the exercise also serves a critical function in supporting digital literacy skills within the arts. By iterating on genre tropes—ranging from dystopian mechanical thrillers to small-town mysteries involving forgotten ledgers—we gain a practical understanding of how algorithmic models interpret and reconstruct human storytelling conventions.

These narrative fragments are integral to our broader investigation into AI-Assisted Storytelling and Scriptwriting, specifically examining how AI handles pacing, dialogue, and plot structures in high-stakes scenarios. As an entirely experimental venture, this dataset allows us to identify the specific training needs for creative professionals who are learning to manage immersive technologies and interdisciplinary workflows. Ultimately, these “unfinished tales” contribute to our Talent Development and Training goals by highlighting the nuances of human-AI collaboration in the creative process.

The Weight of Iron and Doubt

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Young Adult (YA) | Genre: Action-Adventure

A bitter, late autumn wind, sharp with the tang of rusted metal and forgotten industry, whipped through the skeletal remains of the old processing plant. Moonlight, thin and bruised, struggled to penetrate the cloud of dust kicked up by something large, something relentless, moving in the gloom. The air thrummed with a low, predatory hum, vibrating through the cracked concrete and the very bones of the teenagers who pressed themselves against cold, unforgiving steel.

A Breath of Dust and Forgotten Air

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Young Adult (YA) | Genre: Mystery

The air in the old Portlock Community Hall’s storage room was thick with the scent of forgotten paper and decaying wood, a musty perfume that clung to the back of Jeff’s throat. Flecks of dust, disturbed by their cautious movements, danced in the weak light filtering through a grimy window, making the already cramped space feel alive with unseen spectres. Every creak of the floorboards under their worn trainers seemed to echo, magnifying the silence that pressed in from the deserted building around them.

Rust and Forgotten Currents

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Young Adult (YA) | Genre: Mystery

The air inside the Port Haven Mill tasted like forgotten rain and old metal, a metallic tang that clung to the back of the throat. Autumn’s chill was amplified by the concrete walls and broken windowpanes, allowing slivers of a grey afternoon sky to cut through the perpetual gloom. Dust motes, thick as fog, danced in these weak beams, swirling around machinery that looked like skeletal remains of some ancient, hungry beast. Every step echoed, a hollow protest against their intrusion.

Beneath the Settled Dust

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Young Adult (YA) | Genre: Mystery

A biting autumn chill had long settled into the bones of the old municipal building, turning every dust motes dance into a sluggish waltz through shafts of weak, late afternoon sunlight. The air, heavy with the scent of mildewed paper and decaying wood, pressed in on them, making every whispered conversation feel amplified, every floorboard groan a potential betrayal. Spiderwebs, thick as old lace, clung to the corners where the walls met a ceiling stained by decades of forgotten leaks, painting a picture of deliberate neglect, a place the town had chosen to forget.

The Weight of Gold

Author: Jamie F. Bell | Category: Paranormal Romance | Genre: Contemporary Drama

The air held a chill, sharp and clean, carrying the scent of wet soil and woodsmoke. Leaves, the colour of burnt umber and faded ochre, drifted from skeletal branches, collecting in silent, rustling heaps along the forgotten path. The sky, a vast, indifferent canvas of grey, promised an early dusk, and with it, the deeper, encroaching cold of the season.

Design Notes and Applied Research

Today’s curation, spanning Action-Adventure, Mystery, and Contemporary Drama, illustrates the practical application of our program’s focus on skills development within a digital framework. By interrogating the specific conventions of Young Adult and Paranormal Romance, the cohort utilized algorithmic tools to deconstruct narrative pacing and streamline complex world-building research. This selection highlights how the digital transformation of the arts empowers creators to navigate diverse subject categories with increased precision and structural adaptability.

This initiative served as a vital experiment in merging traditional storytelling methodologies with emerging artificial intelligence capabilities. Participants found the process of integrating these new research approaches to be an engaging and spirited exploration of creative potential. The resulting collection documents a successful venture that was as enjoyable to produce as it was educational, fulfilling our objective to modernize artistic practice through experimental learning.

About the Project

The Unfinished Tales and Short Stories collection was an interdisciplinary arts and narrative storytelling experiment in 2025. It was part of a creative arts and participatory research project by The Arts Incubator Winnipeg and the Art Borups Corners collectives. It focuses on two key areas: AI-Assisted Storytelling and Scriptwriting, exploring AI tools for generating ideas, plot structures, and story arcs; and Talent Development and Training, studying digital skills, literacy and training needs for creative professionals by experimenting with AI and immersive technologies to inform future projects. Funding and support were generously provided by the Ontario Arts Council Multi and Inter-Arts Projects program and the Government of Ontario. We thank them for supporting the arts, digital transformation, and applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) research.
