Welcome to our weekly dispatch from the ‘Unfinished Tales and Short Stories’ collection, an ongoing creative arts and research program. This interdisciplinary experiment was undertaken primarily for fun, and to explore the evolving landscape of narrative storytelling—to simply learn what we can do! Each piece represents a snapshot from our dataset, a glimpse into a world-in-progress, capturing the raw energy of initial concepts and character sketches as they begin to take shape.
These narrative fragments are more than just creative exercises; they are vital components of our research into the project’s core goals. They serve as testbeds for exploring AI’s role in idea generation, plot structuring, and the development of alternative story arcs, directly informing our work in AI-Assisted Scriptwriting. Simultaneously, they help us study the skills and training needs for creative professionals managing these new technologies, fostering the digital literacy and interdisciplinary approaches essential for the future of immersive storytelling.

It was a summer night that felt less like a season and more like a heavy, wet blanket draped over everything. A broken fire hydrant wept a thin stream down the gutter, carrying with it a faint, cloying scent of stale rubbish and something metallic, almost like old blood. Above, a single, tired cicada sawed away at the silence, its song a frayed thread in the oppressive stillness of the back alleys. Simon, leaning against a graffiti-scarred brick wall, felt the grit of it through his thin shirt, the fabric already sticking to his skin.
The Gravy

Carmen, perched precariously on a stack of graphic novels, chewed on her lip, eyes glued to the flickering image, a nervous energy vibrating off her. The autumn wind outside rattled the single, high window, a counterpoint to the growing unease in the room.
A Scrimmage on Frostbound Ice

He watched the sluggish, muddy water, waiting, his own thoughts a similar, slow churn.
A Thousand Scattered Fragments

The air in James Carter’s study was thick, tasting of old paper and the lingering, sweet dampness of a spring rain that had just passed. Outside, the world was hushed, but within the amber glow of his desk lamp, a digital storm was brewing. His fingers, surprisingly steady, navigated the labyrinthine corners of the internet, a nightly ritual of reputation monitoring for the Greenacre Collective, his family’s venerable publishing house. Tonight, however, the digital current had snagged something truly venomous.
Design Notes and Applied Research
This collection presents a diverse cross-section of genres and subjects, ranging from Noir and Horror to High Fantasy and Contemporary Fiction. The successful navigation of these distinct forms, including niche combinations like Western Style Boys Love, demonstrates a notable development in narrative skill and structural command. The breadth of this work reflects how digital spaces encourage the exploration and fusion of established storytelling conventions, pushing creative boundaries for a new generation of artists.
The project itself served as a valuable experiment in creative range and adaptability. The juxtaposition of disparate elements, such as the satirical tone within a Legal Thriller or the intricate plotting of a Family Saga, fostered a uniquely dynamic environment for our creators. Ultimately, this collection stands as a successful exploration into the possibilities that emerge when diverse narrative traditions are engaged through new digital frameworks.
About the Project
The Unfinished Tales and Short Stories collection was an interdisciplinary arts and narrative storytelling experiment in 2025. It was part of a creative arts and participatory research project by The Arts Incubator Winnipeg and the Art Borups Corners collectives. It focuses on two key areas: AI-Assisted Storytelling and Scriptwriting, exploring AI tools for generating ideas, plot structures, and story arcs; and Talent Development and Training, studying digital skills, literacy and training needs for creative professionals by experimenting with AI and immersive technologies to inform future projects. Funding and support were generously provided by the Ontario Arts Council Multi and Inter-Arts Projects program and the Government of Ontario.
