SUPPORTING NORTHERN ONTARIO ARTS

Your Hands Are Shaking Because You Care

"Confidence is actually the feeling you get after the show, not the thing you need before."

Essential mindfulness techniques for performing arts anxiety in rural communities.

Why does holding a microphone feel scarier than running into a bear on the highway?

You know that feeling in the green room—or let’s be real, the back hallway of the Legion or the community centre kitchen—where your stomach drops. You're from a place where you recognize half the faces in the crowd. That specific Northern pressure of performing hits different when the audience includes your old gym teacher and the person who fixes your car. It feels like you’re about to be judged on your entire existence, not just the three songs or the poem you’re about to share.

Here is the quiet truth: your nervous system is lying to you. It thinks the spotlight is a threat. It thinks performing is dangerous. When your hands shake or your voice catches, that isn't a sign you aren't ready. It’s just energy. In mindfulness practice, we stop calling it "fear" and start calling it "arousal." Not that kind. Just physiological arousal. Your body is waking up. It’s flooding you with adrenaline because it knows what you're doing matters.

Try this shift. Instead of trying to crush the anxiety, invite it to sit in the chair next to you. This is a core ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) concept. If you fight the nerves, you get tight. If you acknowledge them, saying "Okay, I see you, I’m jittery," they lose their grip. You don't have to be confident to walk on stage. You just have to be willing. Confidence is the feeling you get *after* the show, not before.

Living up here, we’re used to silence. The woods are quiet. The drives are long. Performing disrupts that quiet. It’s vulnerable. But remember that rural crowds are actually starving for connection. They aren't critics looking for a wrong note; they are neighbours looking to feel something. They want you to win. When you stand there, feet planted on the floorboards, you aren't fighting them. You're offering them a gift.

Next time you're about to go on, find your feet. Literally feel your toes in your boots. Look at one physical thing in the room—a scuff on the floor, a light fixture—and name it. Ground yourself in the literal reality of the moment. You are safe. You are prepared. You are just sharing a piece of yourself, and that is brave enough.
