INT. APARTMENT - LIVING ROOM - DAY
BRENDA (32), dressed in a curated ensemble of neutrals that looks expensive but isn't, yanks on the brass handle of a heavy antique secretary desk.
The mahogany drawer refuses to move.
TOM (34), pale with dark circles under his eyes, stands in the doorway of the adjacent study. He watches her struggle, motionless.
It won’t open.
What won't?
The drawer. The little one. It's stuck again.
She rattles the handle violently. The brass CLACKS against the wood.
Jiggle it.
Tom steps back into the shadows of the study. He closes the door.
A soft CLICK.
Then, the sharp SNICK of a deadbolt sliding home.
Brenda freezes. She releases the handle.
She turns to her own workspace: a pristine white slab of particleboard. A single succulent sits next to a copper wire pencil holder.
She sits. Her laptop screen glows.
INSERT - LAPTOP SCREEN:
A blog draft titled: "The Minimalist Pantry: Ten Essential Ingredients for a Month of Frugal Feasting."
BACK TO SCENE
Brenda’s leg bounces under the desk. A rapid, nervous tremor.
From behind the study door, a MUFFLED VOICE begins. Low. Urgent. The tone rises, pleading, then is cut off by heavy silence.
Brenda opens the top drawer of her white desk—the one that slides perfectly smooth.
She retrieves a blister pack. "GuardianAngel Pro." The packaging is a soothing millennial pink.
She stares at the study door.
INT. HALLWAY - LATER
The study lock CLICKS open.
Tom emerges. His forehead is slick with sweat. He walks past Brenda without a glance, shoulders hunched.
He disappears into the bedroom.
MOMENTS LATER
The HISS of a shower starts up.
INT. STUDY - CONTINUOUS
Brenda slips inside. The room smells of stale coffee and metallic sweat.
Tom’s laptop sits open on the desk.
She touches the trackpad. The screen wakes. PASSWORD REQUIRED.
She types: 0-8-1-4.
The desktop loads.
It is a chaotic mess of files. Resumes. Cover letters.
She scans the open browser tabs.
INSERT - BROWSER TABS:
1. A forum header featuring a golden pyramid logo.
2. A chat window: "Coach Rick: Downline requires commitment, Tom."
3. An online banking portal.
BACK TO SCENE
Brenda jams the pink USB stick into the side port.
A window pops up: `Installing... Do not remove device.`
A green progress bar crawls forward.
From the bathroom, the PIPES GROAN as water pressure shifts.
Brenda flinches. She stares at the bar.
Fifty percent.
Seventy-five.
`Installation Complete.`
She yanks the USB out. She wipes the trackpad with her palm.
She exits, pulling the door until the latch catches silently.
INT. LIVING ROOM - MOMENTS LATER
Brenda sits at her white desk. Her phone BUZZES against the particleboard.
She lifts it. A notification: `Subject: GuardianAngel Pro: Your First Report is Ready.`
She taps the screen.
INSERT - PHONE SCREEN:
A log of screenshots scrolls by.
- A chat log: "I put in another two thousand, when do I unlock the Diamond Tier?"
- A bank transfer receipt: -$5,000.00 to "Apex Vitality Solutions, LLC."
- Another transfer: -$1,000.00.
BACK TO SCENE
Brenda’s grip tightens on the phone until her knuckles turn white.
She stands up abruptly. Her chair SCRAPES harsh against the floor.
She turns toward the bedroom, chest heaving.
A CRACK of splintering wood sounds from behind her.
Brenda spins around.
Tom stands by the antique secretary desk. He is fully dressed. His hair is still damp.
In his right hand, he holds a small metal pry bar.
At his feet, the front face of the mahogany drawer lies in splinters.
He isn't looking at the damage. He is looking at what he holds in his left hand.
A thick stack of envelopes. Bundled with a rubber band.
He fans them out. The logos catch the light.
VISA. MasterCard. American Express. The Gourmet Market.
Tom looks up. His eyes are flat. Grey.
A small, humorless smile touches his lips.
Chic on a shoestring, huh?
He holds up a crimson-red envelope. The word OVERDUE is stamped in black.
How much, Brenda?
