In Northwestern Ontario, our stories are literally etched into the landscape. Between the mining history that shaped our towns and the deep, vital indigenous cultures that have been here since time immemorial, we have a narrative depth that most places would kill for. But for too long, we’ve let these stories be told by people who don’t live here. Capacity building in northwestern ontario is about reclaiming that narrative through festival tourism and heritage interpretation.

When we align our creative output with the tourism sector, we aren't just performing for visitors. We are creating an economy that values our identity. Think about it. A tourist comes for the fishing, but they stay for the festival that showcases local digital animation or traditional crafts. They buy a piece of the North to take home. That revenue goes directly back into our pockets, allowing us to build better studios and more robust community programs.

This isn't just about selling souvenirs. It is about high-level creative entrepreneurship. It is about designing outdoor and cultural experiences that are so authentic they can’t be replicated anywhere else. This requires us to be professional, disciplined, and organized. We need to bridge the gap between 'the local artist' and 'the cultural leader.'

Start looking at your work through the lens of capacity building. How does your art serve the town? How does it make someone understand this land better? When you start answering those questions, you stop being a starving artist and start being a pillar of the community. Use the provincial networks. Seek out the advocacy organizations. Let's make sure that when the world looks at the North, they see us leading the charge, not just standing in the background.
